Bowman, an Oak Parker off and on since first grade, was a Chicago Daily News reporter (on religion) and a Chicago Tribune columnist (on Chicago history). He and his wife raised their kids in Oak Park, sending them to Beye, Emerson, and OPRF in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Stimulus = bribery = government as we know it

I agree with Janet Barnstable that the so-called econ stimulus is a bribe, a sort of soothing pill that makes us feel good but makes no difference in the big picture.
But so are many other governmental subsidies, from farm-bill payouts to welfare payments -- much lessened under Bill Clinton, yes -- not to mention thwarting of free trade and the prosperity it brings to keep labor unions happy.
Ms. Barnstable, the whole welfare state is built on bribery.
