Magazine solicitors scamming River Forest residents
River Forest police are advising residents not to buy magazine subscriptions from a group of people who were roaming the streets last week, claiming to be selling magazine subscriptions, but in some cases skimming off the top.

An Oak Park man who owned a real estate company has been indicted in a $35 million mortgage fraud scheme involving 120 homes, the U.S. Attorney's office announced Thursday.

Cops on the watch net arrest for 11 heroin packets
River Forest police also confiscate nearly $1,500 in cash

A surveillance operation in River Forest yielded a big arrest just after noon June 21, when two men were arrested with 11 packets of heroin and nearly $1,500 in cash on Madison at Maple in Oak Park.

For 11 years, Cynthia Hicks' Buddha statue was the heart of the neighborhood. People, young and old, would come to pay tribute to the 2-by-2-foot concrete bust next to Hicks' garage at the corner of Harvey and Pleasant in Oak Park.

A would-be robber picked the wrong dry cleaner to knock over last week. When two men walked into Austin Cleaners at 430 N. Austin in Oak Park around 6:30 p.m. on July 12, they showed a gun and demanded money.

Police finally nabbed a man who stole a bike from an Oak Park woman two months ago. Wesley Todd of Cicero, 41, was arrested July 2 on the 2400 block of S. Central in Cicero and charged with felony theft.

Vandals deface Fenwick athletic fields in River Forest
Someone doesn't like Fenwick very much, or its sports teams, either. A car tore up brand new sod on the high school's athletic fields at 7255 Greenfield in River Forest by driving in circles on the grass doing donuts sometime between June 27 and June 29.

Former Cat Practice employee arrested for theft
Cathy S. Fogaty of Chicago, 52, was arrested at her home on the 4700 block of N. St. Louis in Chicago for theft from The Cat Practice, 323 Chicago Ave. in Oak Park. The arrest, Oak Park police said, was the result of a financial crimes investigation that began in November 2009.
