The man who recently crashed into Oak Park's revolving doors at Village Hall, taking them out of commission, struck again on June 17 - literally.
Andre Powell of Maywood was arrested and charged with reckless driving, driving with a cancelled license, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving in a parking lane after he hit a tree on the 700 block of Chicago Avenue in Oak Park Thursday morning.
His excuse, according to Deputy Police Chief Carl Leidy? He was being chased by gang bangers. Police checked out the scene and did not find any evidence to support Powell's claims.
Disorderly conduct
Brittany Crawford of Oak Park and Dominique Lasenby of Gilberts, both 18, were arrested for respectively, retail theft and disorderly conduct at CVS, 6748 Roosevelt in Oak Park the evening of June 14. CVS security stopped them both and accused them of shoplifting, when Lasenby started shouting, saying that she was going to shoot them. Crawford alone was charged with stealing $65 in cosmetics.
John Kim of River Forest, 40, was arrested for disorderly conduct, battery and resisting arrest the night of June 20 after a caller reported Kim approached a family's car in River Forest, pointed an umbrella at them as if it was a gun and stabbed at the vehicle. When officers found Kim, he allegedly did not cooperate with questioning, and poked an officer in the chest with his umbrella. He allegedly resisted arrest and struck an officer in the process.
Attempted theft
Tony Grayer of Oak Park, 18, was arrested on the 900 block of Washington in Oak Park the afternoon of June 14 for attempted theft of a bike, criminal damage to property and resisting a peace officer. Police said Grayer stole a bike from Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School by cutting its lock, and threw the bolt cutters at officers as they were trying to arrest him.
Theft
A motorized wheelchair, valued at $9,080, was stolen from a common rear porch on the 100 block of N. Humphrey in Oak Park overnight between June 15 and June 16.
A man in his early 40s with dark hair stole a chain with a golden globe medallion, valued at $500, off another man's neck as the victim was sitting on a sidewalk patio at Salerno's, 7128 Roosevelt in Oak Park mid-day on June 17.
Two men were playing a game on the 1100 block of Madison in Oak Park the morning of June 17 when one man grabbed $400 cash and a loose-fitting diamond watch from the other man and ran off eastbound on Madison. Total loss was estimated at $1,700.
Tyrone Washington of Chicago, 39, was arrested the evening of June 17 on a felony charge for theft for stealing two potted plants from the 200 block of N. Taylor in Oak Park. Deputy Police Chief Leidy said that while the theft was less than $90, Washington was charged with a felony because of past convictions. Leidy said Washington may be linked to the theft of other planters in the area.
A 16-to-22-year-old male stole a copper light cover from a street lamp knocked down during the June 18 storm on the 1200 block of N. Marion in Oak Park. The suspect, who was roughly 5-feet, 10-inches with black hair, then allegedly re-entered a green Subaru Outback and drove off.
Retail theft
A 16-year-old Chicago boy was arrested for stealing $18 worth of liquor from Dominick's, 259 Lake St. in Oak Park the evening of June 16.
Auto theft
Someone stole a white Ford dump truck with a red trailer owned by Lorenzo's Landscaping the morning of June 16. The truck was parked on the 1300 block of Monroe in River Forest with the keys in the ignition. The truck was later found June 17 on the South Side of Chicago, without the trailer. The trailer contained various lawn care equipment.
Burglary from vehicle
A weed whacker, a leaf blower, and a heavy duty edger were stolen from a landscaping trailer parked on the 1100 block of S. Oak Park Ave. overnight between June 14 and 15 after the trailer's lock was cut. The loss was estimated at $1,170.
Someone stole a wallet containing credit cards, $6 cash and other items from an unlocked Toyota Camry parked on the 500 block of Edgewood in River Forest overnight between June 18 and June 19.
Residential burglary
Someone stole miscellaneous jewelry, valued at $4,300, from the upstairs bedroom of a home on the 100 block of LeMoyne in Oak Park sometime between June 5 and June 14.
Charles Brady of Chicago, 54, was arrested near the intersection of Division and Austin in Oak Park for burglary to a garage on the 1000 block of N. Taylor in Oak Park the afternoon of June 16. Police said he stole a weed whacker, but cooperated and told police the garage he had stolen it from when arrested.
Someone stole a 42-inch TV, a laptop, a Sony PSP game system and a Wii game system, valued at $1,650, from an apartment on the 1500 block of N. Austin in Oak Park sometime during the day on June 17.
Battery
Donella Harper of Chicago, 33, was arrested for battery on the 600 block of N. Harlem in Oak Park the evening of June 14 when Harper allegedly pepper-sprayed the ex-wife of her child's father. Harper was allegedly going to visit the child's father when she saw the ex-wife leaving and they got into a fight.
Domestic battery
Guillermo Arauz of Chicago, 30, was arrested for domestic battery, resisting arrest and assault on the first block of Park in River Forest the evening of June 19. Arauz was allegedly intoxicated and walking back from Forest Park when he got into an argument on the street with his wife that became physical. His wife then called police.
DUI
Henrietta Stewart-Jones, 41, was arrested for DUI, not having valid insurance, improper lane use and speeding early the morning of June 20 near the intersection of Monroe and North Ave. in River Forest. Police said Stewart-Jones had a blood alcohol level of .214.
Clarence Hatchett of Chicago, 57, was arrested early the morning of June 20 for driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to reduce speed and damage to village property after he ran into a light pole which collapsed onto his car on the 500 block of N. Harlem in Oak Park. He refused medical treatment and was released on bond of $1,000.
Criminal damage to property
Dennis Pete of Chicago, 35, was arrested on the 1100 block of Ontario in Oak Park on the afternoon of June 14 for criminal damage to property at Borders, 1144 Lake, after he was caught allegedly trying to cut alarms off three DVDs at the store.
Deceptive practice
Luis Garcia Herrera and Victor Garcia Herrera were charged with deceptive practice the afternoon of June 20 after they attempted to get change for a $50 bill that was actually a washed $5 bill at Mobil, 754 Harlem in River Forest.
These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Oak Park and River Forest police departments from June 14 to June 21. Not all incidents that occurred are listed. Anyone named in reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated.
