I have learned a great deal about Jesus through Helen Mildenhall [One way to find The Way is Off the Map, Viewpoints, Jan. 16]. Although she is not a "believer" (meaning to hold to Orthodox Christianity), she is a person who follows in the way of Jesus. He taught us to put others first, to remember and honor others above ourselves and to forget about our needs and helps others.
He told us if we do that (give away or "lose" our life), we would then discover the true meaning of life. I aspire to do those things and celebrate the smallest of attempts at being otherly, regardless of the particular beliefs or non-beliefs a person espouses.
Jesus said: By their fruits (not beliefs) you will know them. Which reminds me of a funny T-shirt I just heard about: "They'll know we are Christians by our Christian T-shirts."
